Language as a Missing Link: Introduction to a Toolkit to Enhance Engagement Language and Literacy with Emily Rubin
Wednesday, May 15, 2024 @ 9:00am - 3:00pm
Language development dramatically and positively impacts life outcomes. Conversely, the failure to develop a capacity for effective communication jeopardizes emotional and mental well-being as well as literacy and academic success. Research demonstrates that one of the most powerful predictors of literacy outcomes is a child’s language development in the early years AND the early grades. By the end of elementary school, 61 percent of students with typical language development achieve the expected standard in literacy compared to only 15 percent of those without. Language is also vital to the use of one’s inner dialogue, required to reason effectively, regulate emotions, cope with everyday challenges, and have a demonstrated protective effect on child and adolescent mental health. If we invest proactively, language development becomes an opportunity to enhance emotional well-being and quality of life. This workshop will introduce a freely accessible toolkit designed for individuals, practitioners, and policymakers to employ practices that apply language as a well-being indicator to improve educational, mental health, and well-being outcomes.
