Workshop 2: The Opportunity Lens: Discovering Problems Worth Solving

Compelling social innovations begin with a clear and evidence-based understanding of the social issues they aim to address. Participants will learn about human-centered design frameworks in this second of four innovation workshops to identify opportunities to amplify their community impact. They will also practice techniques for framing questions that fa.cilitate expansive brainstorming. Additionally, we will discuss various hands-on, community-based approaches to understanding issues from the community’s perspective, thereby generating effective solutions firmly rooted in the community’s lived experiences
This training is approved for two hours of continuing education for core social work, related licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists.
Instructor:
Humberto Camarena, MBA, MSW, is a creative thinker committed to social justice and inclusivity. With over 15 years of nonprofit experience in education, immigration, homelessness, mental health, and youth empowerment, he has worked internationally in Chile, China, Dominica, and Mexico. Humberto is the co-author of Innovation from Within: Redefining How Nonprofits Solve Problems and integrates principles of social innovation into his consulting work with dozens of nonprofits. He has held leadership roles at Boston College and Pontificia Universidad Católica, focusing on building the innovation capacity of current and future leaders to address social issues.
